48 Hours in San Sebastián del Oeste
San Sebastián del Oeste is one of Jalisco's Pueblos Mágicos, in the Sierra Occidental, less than two hours from Puerto Vallarta. Many visitors only know it as a day trip; this guide is for those who want to stay overnight and get to know it at a relaxed pace.
Getting There
From Puerto Vallarta, San Sebastián del Oeste is about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours away by car, via federal highway 544 towards Mascota. From Guadalajara, the drive is longer, via the road to Talpa/Mascota. We recommend driving during daylight, as the mountain road has curves.
Suggested Itinerary
Day 1 — Historic Center and Arrival
Arrival and check-in at your lodging. Walk through the town's historic center, its colonial architecture and main square. Lunch at one of the local restaurants. Free afternoon to explore the cobblestone streets and rest from your trip.
Day 2 — Nature and High-Altitude Coffee
San Sebastián del Oeste is known for its high-altitude coffee production and nearby natural attractions.
Cerro de la Bufa
Cerro de la Bufa is approximately a 30-minute drive from San Sebastián del Oeste. Visit Mexico recommends hiring a certified local tour operator and using a vehicle suitable for the winding terrain; the final section involves an approximately 15-minute walk, depending on fitness. The official source does not publish fixed opening hours or an admission fee. Confirm weather, road conditions and operator availability before departing.

Haravéri Botanical Garden is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a published admission fee of MXN $150 per person. Visits are guided and personalized, so advance booking is recommended. Access includes approximately 7.5 kilometers of unpaved road from La Estancia de Landeros; a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Bring water, sunscreen, biodegradable insect repellent, long sleeves and suitable walking or hiking shoes.

Weather and What to Pack
